Terms of use

The deal between you and me, written to be read rather than skipped.

Version 2026-08-27, in effect from 27 August 2026.

1. Who you are agreeing with

Shmudget is made and run by one person, Josh Dunstan, in Australia. In these terms "I" and "me" mean him, and "you" means whoever is using the account.

2. What Shmudget is

Shmudget is a budgeting tool. You type in the money you expect to come in and go out, it works out what each line costs a month or a year, and it draws you some charts. That is the whole of it.

It is a planning tool, not a bank. It does not connect to your bank, it does not move money, and nothing you do in it changes anything in the real world.

3. It is not financial advice

Nothing in Shmudget is financial, tax, credit or legal advice, and I am not licensed to give any of it. The figures it shows are arithmetic on the numbers you typed in. What you do about them is your decision, and if it is a big one, talk to somebody qualified.

4. Your account

You need to be at least 16 to have an account, and the email address you sign up with has to be one you actually control. That is what the confirmation code is for.

Keep your password to yourself. Anything done from your account is treated as done by you, so tell me if you think somebody else has got into it.

An account is for one person. If you want somebody else in your budget, invite them from Settings and they get their own login. Sharing a password instead means their changes look like yours and there is no way to take the access back.

5. Sharing a budget

Inviting somebody into your budget gives that email address access to everything in it, and an editor can change everything in it. Invites work on the address alone, so check the spelling. You can take access away again at any time from Settings, and you should, because taking it away is the only way it stops.

6. What you may not do

Do not use Shmudget to:

  • break the law, or help anybody else break it
  • store other people's money details without their say
  • attack, overload, scrape or reverse engineer the app, or poke at other people's accounts
  • resell access to it as if it were yours

7. Your data is yours

What you type in belongs to you. I do not sell it, I do not advertise against it, and I do not read it for anything except fixing a fault you have asked me to fix.

You can export your budget to a CSV whenever you like, and you can delete the lot from Settings. Deleting is immediate and there is no undo, so export first if you might want it back. Backups of the database may hold a copy for a short while after that before they age out.

To run the app at all I use a few other services: Cloudflare hosts it and stores the database, Resend sends the email, and Google handles sign-in if you choose that button. Each of them sees only what it needs to do its part. The privacy page lists all of them and says what each one can see.

8. Paid plans

The free plan is free and stays free. If you buy a paid plan, the price and what it includes are what the pricing page said at the time you bought it.

You can cancel whenever you want and you keep the paid features until the period you have paid for runs out. I do not refund part of a period unless something on my end was broken, in which case ask me and I probably will. If a payment fails the account drops back to the free plan, and nothing in your budget is deleted for it.

9. Uptime, changes and endings

I will keep Shmudget running and I will fix what breaks, but it is one person and one app, so I cannot promise it is never down. Features may change or go away as it develops. If something you rely on is going, I will say so before it does.

You can stop using it and delete your account at any time. I can suspend or close an account that is being used for anything in clause 6, or that is costing me money in bad faith. If I ever shut Shmudget down altogether, you get reasonable notice and time to export.

10. Where the limits are

Shmudget is provided as it is. I do not warrant that it is free of faults or that it fits any particular purpose beyond what it plainly does.

I am not liable for money you lost on a decision you made with it, for data you deleted, or for anything you could have avoided by keeping your own export. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is capped at what you have paid me in the twelve months before the problem, which for most people is nothing.

If you are in Australia, the consumer guarantees in the Australian Consumer Law apply and nothing here takes them away.

11. Changes to these terms

These terms will change as the app does. The current version is always on this page, with a date at the top. If a change materially affects you I will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect, and carrying on using Shmudget after that is how you accept it.

12. Law, and getting in touch

These terms are governed by the law of Australia, and the Australian courts are where any argument about them gets settled. If something here is unclear or looks wrong, use the contact button in the app and tell me. I read every message.
